Emmitt Klein-Stropnicky, founder of Cerulean Studio, was born and raised in the coastal town of Scituate, MA. He has been doing metal work since he was a teenager where he fell in love with the magic of welding — he has over 20 years of metalworking under his belt. Having graduated from Pratt Institute in 2008, he received a BFA in sculpture and developed most of his career while living in Brooklyn. For 10 years, Emmitt was a lead fabricator for high-end light fixture and furniture companies, working in all kinds of metals, but specifically in brass, bronze, and steel.
The idea of Cerulean Studio was born in a former metal shop while exploring different patinas– a chemical process that creates various kinds of oxidation on metals. Beautiful hues of blue and green emerged on the brass surface mimicking that of the ocean. Leaning towards functional minimalism, the products are created with purpose, simple lines and with refined design.
Each design is often influenced by shapes of “leftover” scraps of metal from previous projects. Every product is cut and shaped by hand and then assembled by welding, soldering, or mechanically joined with hardware. What truly brings the work to life is applying the different kinds of patina, a “living finish” which creates a one-of-a-kind piece that pairs minimalist shapes with organic finishes, marrying classic and modern design.
After living away from home for nearly two decades, Emmitt came back to Scituate in late 2022 where he resides once again in the sea foam green house that he grew up in, working out of his matching workshop on the property.
